Austin Rainbow Theatre

Safe space policy

Austin Rainbow Theatre (ART) is dedicated to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone who engages with our work — including production staff, performers, volunteers, and audiences. Whether you’re attending a performance, participating in a rehearsal, or working behind the scenes, ART is a space where LGBTQIA+ voices are celebrated, and all people are treated with dignity.

Our Commitments

  • Provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere in our rehearsal rooms, backstage spaces, and performance venues.

  • Foster equitable opportunities for artistic participation and leadership, with a focus on uplifting LGBTQIA+ voices.

  • Maintain safe working and performance environments that encourage creativity, vulnerability, and collaboration.

  • Listen and respond promptly to concerns raised by staff, artists, or community members.

Community Expectations

All members of our community — staff, artists, volunteers, and audience members — are expected to:

  • Treat others with kindness, respect, and professionalism.

  • Use inclusive and affirming language in rehearsals, performances, and public spaces.

  • Respect physical and emotional boundaries during creative processes and performances.

  • Refrain from discriminatory, harassing, or unsafe behavior, including but not limited to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or hate speech.

  • Honor rehearsal and performance spaces as collaborative, respectful, and creative environments.

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behaviors are not tolerated at any ART rehearsal, performance, event, or online space:

  • Harassment, bullying, or intimidation of staff, artists, or audience members.

  • Verbal, physical, or sexual harassment in any form.

  • Disruption of rehearsals or performances.

  • Destruction of property, disregard for venue rules, or unsafe conduct that impacts others.

Addressing Concerns

If you experience or witness behavior that violates this policy:

  • Speak with an ART staff member, stage manager, or house manager immediately.

  • Concerns may also be reported confidentially via email at info@austinrainbowtheatre.org.

  • All reports will be taken seriously, and ART will take appropriate action, which may include removal from the rehearsal, performance, or, in serious cases, restriction from future ART activities.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Safe space is a shared responsibility. ART commits to ongoing education, open dialogue, and accountability to maintain an environment where creativity, artistry, and community can thrive.
